Weet iemand waarvoor de Update 2 van ESX 3.5 "Temporarily Unavailable" is?

Ik weet het niet leuk. Het heeft te maken met de licentie deze gaat verlopen op 12 augustus. Er is hier een open case van. Meer info volgt.

Symptoms
A virtual machine fails to power on, fails to leave suspend mode, or fails to migrate with VMotion and the following message is displayed in the vmware.log file for the virtual machine:

This product has expired. Be sure that your host machine's date and time are set correctly.There is a more recent version available at the VMware web site: http://www.vmware.com/info?id=4.--------------Module License Power on failed.
Currently running virtual machines will continue to run but will not be able to perform migration with VMotion, suspend or power on virtual machines.

Resolution
The issue is found with ESX Server 3.5 U2, ESX Server 3i version 3.5 Update 2 Installable, and ESX Server 3i version 3.5 Update 2 Embedded. Currently there is no workaround for the issue and VMware engineering is actively working on resolving this issue. This KB article will be updated as soon as more information is available, check back frequently for updates and additions.

Bericht vanuit VMWare :

Ik snap niet dat ze adviseren om de tijd terug te zetten. Dit zou voor al je VM's betekenen dat ze terug in de tijd gaan omdat ze waarschijnlijk de tijd synchroniseren via de vmware tools. Lijkt me slechte optie !!!

Waar heb je die workaround vandaan?

Dat kan absoluut een issue zijn, maar je kunt de tijd eventueel tijdelijk terugzetten om de VM op te starten. Als de VM eenmaal draait, zal hij niet meer uitgezet worden.

Bijvoorbeeld:
service ntpd stop
date -s 08/01/2008
vmware-cmd /vmfs/volumes/vm path/vmname.vmx start
service ntpd start

Er vanuitgaande dat je ntpd op je host gebruikt.

Ik las al dat eigenlijk de VM-tools nooit terug in de tijd zouden mogen gaan. Maar lees in dit draadje: http://communities.vmware.com/thread/16 ... 0&start=30 dat het toch niet altijd goed gaat.

Jeremy, weet je of er al getest is met lokale licentie files op elke host? Zodat ze niet met de license server gaan praten? (Als tijdelijke oplossing)

En zit jij dicht genoeg bij het vuur om hier een update te geven als er een fix uitkomt?

Ik heb op mijn thuis systeem even getest en het werkt perfect. Heb je dus alleen nog een relatief kleine kans dat op moment dat de tijd terug staat en een al draaiende VM de tijd wil syncen, deze terug in de tijd gaat.

Maar die kans is relatief klein denk ik

Ik zit helaas niet dicht genoeg bij het vuur voor een timeline, maar ik weet wel dat er met volle kracht aan een oplossing wordt gewerkt. Dit is de officiele berichtgeving die ik kort geleden binnen kreeg:

An issue has been uncovered with ESX 3.5 Update 2 and ESXi 3.5 that causes the product license to expire on August 12. VMware is alerting customers and partners of this issue. VMware regrets the inconvenience caused to customers. Updated product bits with correct licensing will be made available for download as soon as possible.

Het is dus nog even afwachten in ieder geval.

Wil bovenstaande zeggen dat mijn draaiende VM's crashen of is dit probleem alleen actief wanneer je een VMware machine wilt starten?

Draaiende VMs zullen gewoon blijven draaien...dat is geen probleem!

Ja, klopt helemaal. Als je die kans wilt minimaliseren, zul je de VMware tools-timesync op je andere VM's uit moeten zetten (dit kun je uiteraard ook tijdelijk doen).

Hier is een kort lijstje met wat recommendations van een van mijn collega's:

1. Set DRS to manual
2. Do not VMotion
3. Do not power off or suspend VM
4. If you have some important VMs you need to turn on again
a. Create a quarantine host – a standalone host without any VMs
b. Set time on this host back
c. Verify, that your VM will not synchronize its time with that host
d. Cold migrate VM to the quarantine host
e. Power VM on, log into it and set check the time setting. If necessary set the time manually

You could also think about temporarily disconnecting the VM to power on from the Virtual Switch. This way you are certain that the VM will not be able to communicate with a DC while it's out of time-synch. This allows you to set the time manually before connecting it back to the Virtual Switch.

Workaround voor vmotion:

service ntpd stop
date -s 08/01/2008

VMotion-en maar.

Mocht VC miepen over HA agent error (en dat gaat ie doen) even:

service ntpd start

intikken, dan reconfigure for HA waarna je weer kan beginnen bij Workaround.

Als je klaar bent zet je ntp weer aan en zorg je er voor dat HA weer (in theorie) reconfigured.

Niet recommended voor produktie aangezien HA op zijn beurt in de praktijk weer niet zal werken wegens de 12 augustus expiration...(or will it?? )

Er wordt morgen een nieuwe versie online gezet (by noon, August 13, PST).

Dat is een hoera.

Is het een mogelijkheid dat deze patch ook via mirrors (bijvoorbeeld vmug.nl? ) gedownload kan worden, zodat niet iedereen tegelijkertijd de servers van VMWare platlegt om de patch te downloaden?
